What The Evolution of APs and Cloud Means For The Next Generation of Enterprises

When it comes to cloud managed WLAN, it’s intriguing how the various vendors have architected their solutions. Years ago, in the controller-less days, the WLAN market consisted of fat APS  that did everything within themselves, and simple SNMP-like managers were written to talk to these APs in order to collect statistics and push configuration. There wasn’t muchinter-AP smarts at that time.

Shortly thereafter  came the “thin” AP architecture, where larger controllers were designed to offload non-critical tasks away from the APs. This allowed  APs to do their most important tasks: client RF, client throughput optimizations and policy enforcements. Controllers helped coordinations amongst APs in real-time, creating and optimizing policies, and helping with roaming assist. This became the de-facto deployment method for large campuses where hundreds or even thousands of APs were installed in a single large site; however, controller and licenses weren’t  budget-friendly for smaller sites. APs had improved CPU/RAM capabilities and some of the controller functions could be completed by the APs themselves, particularly if they had only a small number of clients to serve. This gave rise to the newer controller-less architectures of current generation, for example, Aerohive, Aruba Instant and Ruckus Unleashed. For a true enterprise WLAN offering, these APs need to provide similar  functions, as the controller andAP solution offers.

Vendors have  also evolved to deliver their own cloud managed WLAN solutions. One vendor offered a disruptive cloud-scale management solution that utilized big data technologies to aggregate data, configuration and analytics for hundreds, even thousands of APs. Over time, the vendor added some true controller type features in the cloud to help APs in real-time decision making; they evolved from a Cloud Manager to a Cloud Controller type architecture.

 There is a need for a highly scalable cloud controller solution that can deliver enterprise grade WLAN service for small sites as well as large AP campuses. Aruba, Aerohive and Cisco all offer these services; however, they either don’t work on larger sites or the offering doesn’t utilize any of their controller technologies in the cloud. Alternatively, the Ruckus Cloud offering, built on top of the virtual SmartZones, is hosted in the public cloud and managed by Ruckus NOC and aims to bring the best of controller scale to the simplicity-driven IT staff of the next generation enterprises. While there is a lot of work ahead of us, we’re excited about the existing components and strong roadmap for the future.

Expanding our Wave 2 Portfolio: Making Networks Efficient For All Devices

Any technology company today will likely tell you we are in the midst of a massive digital transformation, and in order to keep up, businesses across the globe need things to be done faster than ever before. Whether it’s making decisions, getting a new product to market or serving customers, the need for speed is vital to succeed in today’s innovation climate. This is especially true for wireless networks.

The proliferation of Wave 2 11ac Wi-Fi technology embedded into client devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops continues to flood the market resulting in a diverse client mix ranging from slow, fast to high-speed clients. As indoor and outdoor wireless networks become more and more saturated with active users, the propensity to have a poor Wi-Fi experience increases. Research from Strategy Analytics predicts the number of connected devices per person will more than double to 4.3 by 2020.

It’s not just the multiple devices people now carry with them impacting Wi-Fi performance. It’s also the explosion of cloud-based applications such as video and voice that require robust network performance from the core to the edge.

Luckily, 802.11ac Wave 2 brings gigabit speed to wireless networks, eliminating the need to compromise between speed and performance. 802.11ac Wave 2 technology improves network efficiency by bringing MU-MIMO to Wi-Fi, enabling the access point (AP) to communicate with multiple client devices simultaneously. Before MU-MIMO, the AP would serve clients one at a time, in a round robin fashion. With MU-MIMO, network airtime efficiency increases because all clients (MU-MIMO and non MU-MIMO) are served faster. With 802.11ac Wave 2, you can stream Netflix to your mobile device without degrading the performance of the network for everyone else. In an outdoor scenario, several fans watching replays in a crowded stadium with their mobile devices will experience a good video experience.

Ruckus was first-to-market with Wave 2 APs in April 2015 and now has the industry’s broadest Wave 2 portfolio. We continue to expand that portfolio with today’s announcement of two new access points to the ZoneFlex™ family—the ZoneFlex R610 indoor access point (AP) and the ZoneFlex T610 outdoor AP. Ruckus Sails Into Another Smart City

Imagine being out on the ocean with the wind at your back, smelling the salty air and feeling the mist of water on your face, as you hang over the edge watching the bow of the boat slice through the waves. Some of us can only imagine this type of exhilaration and others have made a lifetime hobby out of sailing. However, we can all appreciate a great competition and everyone loves to gather on such occasions.

Located in Germany, Kiel is a traditional maritime and naval city famous for its sailing competitions and hosting the largest sailing event known as ‘Kieler Woche’ (Kiel Week). The festival takes place in June over the course of nine days, with more than 3 million guests attending. As is the case with any large event, cities need to prepare for the amount of visitors entering the area. So what do you think the city of Kiel’s main concern was for this event? You got it—fast and reliable Wi-Fi.

Nowadays, Wi-Fi isn’t just expected – it’s required, and Kiel Week was the perfect time to deploy a smart city Wi-Fi network. With the city of Kiel setting its sights on offering public Wi-Fi, they turned to Ruckus Wireless and partner ADDIX Internet Services to provide an innovative digital city experience to its citizens and visitors. Within two weeks, an elaborate network of Ruckus’ ZoneFlex access points enabled more than 50,000 users to simultaneously access the Internet via Wi-Fi throughout the entire event area.

In order to attract as many visitors to use the wireless network during Kiel Week, an app called Walk & Explore Kiel was developed. The app allowed visitors to plan their tour of Kiel. Users were given recommendations and instructions on more than 2,000 events in real time, enabling them to follow collateral events via live stream. This bandwidth-hungry application would have made the regular cellular network collapse during Kiel Week and would thus not be usable without comprehensive WLAN.

The City of Kiel’s use of Ruckus won’t stop there. They will continue to use the  WLAN solution by Ruckus Wireless in order to advance the project further and deliver reliable Wi-Fi for the other 51 weeks of the year.

Happy 1st Birthday Unleashed!!

November is finally here and the disappointment shown by well, everyone, in the lack of red cups at Starbucks is just another reminder that it’s almost the most wonderful time of the year again.

Along the same lines, I can’t believe it is already one year since we launched Unleashed, a controller-less solution. At the time of launch,only two 11ac APs (R500 and R600) were supported as part of Unleashed.

In just one short year, the Unleashed portfolio has expanded to support 10 different models of 11ac APs including our WAVE-2 high end R710 (indoor) and T710 (outdoor). In summary, Unleashed portfolio now supports R310, R500, R600, R710, T300, T300e, T301n, T301s, T710, and T710s. Thanks to two features-rich releases we have delivered since the launch.

Nearly 5000 customers have successfully deployed Unleashed worldwide, in the last 12 months alone. You won’t hear from any disappointed customers or partners here, but you will hear about how easy it is to deploy and manage the Unleashed network while not having to compromise on the features. It is widely known to the world about our RF leadership in Wi-Fi industry.
